Use Your Next Real Estate Convention for Content Ideas

 September 26, 2016

Show me someone with a website, and I’ll show you someone who, at least sometimes, thinks they have nothing to write about or no good topics for their next video or podcast. It happens to everyone who decides to create content on a regular basis. Eventually, you have a moment – or a week or a month – when you think there’s nothing else to talk about.

Think again!

Are you the real estate agent who heads to at least one big meeting a year? There are so many. Your MLS probably has a meeting. Your state association definitely does. If you work for a big brokerage, you’ve probably got a few to choose from across the country.

Whether you realize it or not, those meetings are perfect for coming up with new content ideas. Don’t believe me? As someone who spent several years going to at least three or four meetings a year, I promise the ideas are ready and waiting for you to jump on them.

New Trends in Technology

At every convention, there’s always a session about new technology. Sure, you need that information to be the best but there’s nothing wrong with sharing the upcoming trends in real estate with your followers. Can buyers expect new apps to be available to help them in their search? Is your MLS getting new public-facing features that are good for buyers? People want to know about the tools and tricks that are going to help them in their real estate search.

Interviews and Conversations

While interviews work in blog posts, there’s nothing like a video or audio recording of you talking to someone who’s an expert in their field to give your audience something new. You could juggle multiple schedules, pray that Skype works, and hope your internet connection holds to do an interview. Or you could do a quick meet-up at convention with someone you know and admire. Reach out to them before the meeting starts and send them the questions you’ll ask so you’re both prepared. It’ll make everything go a little quicker.

Show Off Your Knowledge

What new thing did you learn at the last convention you went to? How did it (or will it) change how you do business? There’s nothing wrong with sharing that information with your readers. Maybe you’ve always done specific types of postcards for your listings and now you know a new way. Write something up about it. Create an entire blog post on new methods to market listings with what you’ve learned at convention. Answer your sellers’ most common question – how will you market my house? – before they ask it.

Inspire Your Followers

I haven’t been to big real estate meeting yet that didn’t have at least one keynote speaker brought in to inspire – through laughter or deep thought. Sure, they’re talking to you as a real estate agent, but you can always share the message with your followers. Did they tell you to reach for the stars? Were you encouraged to find humor in the mundane? For a few moments, did you feel lighter, happier, and uplifted? Share that speaker’s message (while giving them full credit, of course) and inspire your own followers.

As you head out to your company’s big meeting, a broker summit, or the state or national convention this year, keep your eyes open for new content ideas. Whether it’s an interview with someone you respect or tips buyers or sellers can use, take the opportunity to build your online presence and generate leads all by sharing new things you’re learning and collaborating with professionals you respect and admire.
